Home run

With the passing of another academic year, tomorrow high school seniors take their first steps into a world of wonder and promise, tinged with traces of uncertainty and a splash of danger. Recent world events have proved that no matter how much policy makers believe they understand players in the global political theater, those in charge might overlook the possibility of a third act plot deviation. Twas always this way, me thinks.

But of these soon to be former students, I can remember my high school graduation, not like it was yesterday, but rather like it was a lifetime ago. I would hardly recognize the person in the white suit jacket and tie now as myself. Pictures are not going to jog the memory, since many of the pictures from that era disappeared in a curious theft years ago.

Curious because the thief–or perhaps thieves, sometimes it takes a village–passed over framed Ansel Adams prints and jewelry settled upon a Jerry Garcia styled Build-A-Bear and my yearbooks. Maybe the pawn shop paid sentimental value. Probably not.

So who really knows what I really looked like in that fateful period. Really, it no longer matters. What matters is the day came and went, and all the experiences since that moment and most especially those to come.

There’s a pretty amazing world out there, and lots waiting for these graduates as they learn about themselves and the people they really care about: The cast of Jon and Kate and Project Runway.

And should the flames peeking through the open keyhole of their future make the doorknob to hot for handling just now, they can immerse themselves in college for the next four to seven years.

Hey, it beats working.

For Memorial Day Weekend, I co-hosted the first party ever held in the humble apartment. Perhaps the prior tenants held a bash or two, but in the nine plus years since their occupancy . . . well, that I can vouch for the absence of any such events. By party, I mean a social gathering of more than four people, none of whom are relatives.

This is one of the benefits of The Poet: she has a way of drawing the right people together in the same room. Unfortunately we both had so much fun, forgot to capture the event on film.

But the book trailer for The Last Track made its first public exhibition towards the end of the evening.

I think it went over well. We’ll see how everyone else takes to it in August . . .

Though cast to the sea of damnation years ago, Mary Kay “The Lecher” Letourneau surfaced recently. Goodie.

Doing good deeds for orphans? Building nursing homes for the infirm? Raising awareness for victims of swine-flu? No, for hosting a “Hot for Teacher” competition.

Not sure who needs more help. Myself or the promoters of the event.

Sam: God gave rock and roll to you
A Bud: He did? Is it lost in the mail? I don’t think I got it yet.
Sam: He put it in the heart and soul of everyone.
A Bud: Not Jerry Falwell. He didn’t get it, either.

X-Men: Wolverine

Director Gavid Hood translated the lore of Mr. “It’s all about me” Wolverine into an action packed movie that proves how there is great depth to the indestructible and slightly hairy hero. Being a bit ignorant of the full arc, I can not assert whether the story honored the tradition of the comic. What I do know is that the movie delivers entertainment. Loads of it.

The story pits brother against brother, mutant against mutant, mutant against government, woman against mutant. It’s a love story, but it’s more than that. It’s an action flick, but it’s more than that. It is Wolverine.

Action. Adventure. Ass-kicking. Smells like a hit summer flick.

What works:

1) Cast: Dead on, even though Liev Schreiber and Balthazar Getty ( who is not in the movie ) could also be Logan’s brother.

2) Pacing: Effective. The right mix of quiet time and elbow strikes.

3) Solid and believable back story makes this tale work.

4) Accessible: No prior knowledge of the X-Men or Wolverine is necessary.

Verdict: Theater full-price or DVD purchase.

For the past few months, it’s been pretty quiet around the site. Less updates, with gaps of silence between each one. It seems breakthroughs in my personal/professional life and the frequency of site updates are inversely proportional. The more going behind the scenes, the less I find myself writing about matters that divert creative energy from those endeavors in a public forum.  Or wanting to write about them at all, actually.

I suppose such reaction works counter-intuitively in practice. Certain happenings could be interesting to outsiders, but my tendency to be quiet about major developments in the moment is just something I do. Often by the time I make peace with some weighty events and reach a place where they stop drawing down so much mental and creative energy, the prospect of posting about them seems a step backwards. Really, the world has bigger issues than my problems coping with good or bad news, does it not?

Maybe such reasoning is moot given the frenetic posts on Twitter that have consumed the collective Internet consciousness in the past year. Lately it seems anything, including finding scratchy toilet paper in a friend’s bathroom is notable–even while attending a party where one made the shocking discovery.

All I can do is reach for a balance that works and feels right. Somewhere between period check-ins and noting what’s on the end of my fork is probably the answer.

In the meantime, here’s two points of interest:

Met with Steve about the video project. He’s going to make some very surgical tweaks in the next few days, and then apply a nifty filter that will make the digital video look more like film. And insert some little surprises for the super attentive.

I’m writing again. Ahh.
